12 things I miss about Costa Rica

It’s just shy of three months since we left Costa Rica. Many people still ask us what it’s like to be back, if we’re happy to be back, and if we’ve acclimatised yet. There’s no quick or easy answer to all of that, as we’re not dealing with something as simple as changing from one temperature to another. As anyone will tell you, moving to an entirely different country (outside of North America) involves more than a physical location. Costa Rica was more than just a place, it was a way of life, and an experience that has changed the way I live now.

Almost right away, we missed some things, though most of that was due to the roughly 40 degree Celsius shift in temperature. Other things soon made themselves known, each time with the all-too-familiar pang of loss and regret.

But like when we moved down to Costa Rica, this is just something we’ll have to get used to.

2009, A Year in Review

The year past was one of the toughest ones I can remember. It’s been a year of extreme highs, some pretty darks depths; my share of awesome joys, mixed with an unhealthy dose of stress. And that’s not when you consider the economy, I might add — things are even worse when you roll all that in.

The year closed out on a more sombre note for me, in many ways. Much quieter, and I got to spend a lot of time with my family (which I cherish now, and cannot regret in anyway), but the future is a little less certain. I’m less concerned about that fact than I thought I would be, however.

A (wet) birthday vacation

Well, Monkey, if your memory is any good, you should remember the last few days for the rest of your life. And not because you got to spend five uninterrupted days with your dad (remember, I just turned 37 … I’m not old), or even because Nana is here for a visit.

It’s ‘cuz I doubt you’ll ever see that much rain ever again.

Minus Forty Eight

That’s the temperature right now.

With the wind chill.

My knees are numb.

My thighs are pink blocks of frozen flesh.

I think my eyeballs fogged over when I walked in the office.

Going home is going to be about as much fun — the non-wind chill temperature is only going up two degrees from -30 to -28. I suspect the wind won’t help any.

Calgary Winter Weather

I’m sort of working from home today (taking care of my family is more accurate). We had to drive down to the south end of town to Alex’s doctor. If you live in Calgary, you know what that means today.

For those of you who haven’t heard, Calgary had another dump of snow last night. In theory, that shouldn’t really matter — this is Calgary, after all.

Even though it is still autumn seasonally, winter always comes early at this latitude. It arrived a couple of weeks ago. You’d think after that time, people would adjust…

North and south of the city, cars are piled in the ditches. Cars stalled on city streets. Traffic moving at a snail’s pace — and by the time we hit the road, the roads were merely wet.

The forecasters say this will be the coldest winter in 15 years. One can only wonder how accurate the forecast will be, and how much snow we will get.

And how many cars will end up in ditches…
