FYI, Railway police do not have the same authority as real police officers. You are correct about the 500meter issue, however the offence has to have something to do with the administration of the railway property. ie a person involved in a domestic dispute with someone near the tracks is not something the railway police would have jurisdiction.

Furthermore, im sure you dont realize that the public police have complete control and oversight of all criminal offences committed on railway property. The jurisdictional police are in charge of all fatalites and accidents on railway property. You are misleading people when you say that the private police departments of the big railways are the same are regular police. They are police officers, but they answer to a private company and not the public like a municipal police officer does. They are limited in their authority to railway property only on or in relation to it within 500 meters. A very specialized law enforcement officer, definitely, but not the same as a RCMP as you put it.
